  1. Craftsmanship is the desire to work well

Craftsmanship names an enduring human impulse to do a job well for its own sake, not a special class of manual labor. This impulse extends well beyond skilled trades to programmers, doctors, parents, and citizens, anyone engaged in concrete practice for the sake of quality itself.

  2. Hand and head cannot be separated

Skilled practice dissolves the division between thinking and making: the trained hand generates understanding that cannot be arrived at through reasoning alone. Techniques of the body produce insight, so denying people the chance to work materially also denies them a form of thought.

  3. Resistance and ambiguity build skill

Craftsmen develop competence by engaging the frustration of intractable material rather than avoiding it, learning to stay with resistance long enough to work through it. Encountering ambiguity and problems one did not seek out is what forces the expansion of skill, so difficulty is a condition of mastery rather than an obstacle to it.

  4. Problem-solving and problem-finding intertwine

Skilled work alternates between solving a given problem and detecting new problems the solution reveals, so curiosity about what went wrong becomes a tool of improvement. The good craftsman therefore dwells on difficulties instead of rushing to closure, treating a stuck point as information rather than failure.

  5. The CNC machine deskills its operators

When bakeries and other workplaces replaced hands-on technique with computer-controlled machinery, workers lost the embodied knowledge of the material and could no longer diagnose or improvise when things went wrong. Misused automation that removes people from direct engagement with the work degrades skill rather than elevating it.

  6. Good tools leave room for repair

Sennett distinguishes tools and environments that invite the user to understand, adjust, and mend them from those that seal the user out and demand only compliance. Judging an artifact by whether it permits engaged repair reveals whether it cultivates or atrophies the user's skill.
