  1. Omega Pregnancy and the Warden's Ring

In 2021, twenty-five years after the last recorded human births in 1995, Oxford historian Theo Faron is approached by a small dissident group, the Five Fishes, and learns that one member, Julian, is pregnant. Theo helps her flee the regime of his cousin Xan Lyppiatt, the Warden of England, and she gives birth in hiding. Theo then kills Xan in a confrontation and slips the Warden's Coronation Ring onto his own finger, leaving it open whether the rescuer will become the next ruler.

  2. A Future-less Society Chooses Comfort Over Liberty

When a population no longer expects to have descendants, the long-term goods that justify political sacrifice, such as justice and rights, lose their appeal. People willingly hand power to an autocrat who promises security, comfort and freedom from fear during the decline. Tyranny then needs no violent seizure, because citizens consent to it as the reasonable price of a quiet ending.

  3. Humane-Seeming Disposal of Surplus People

The regime removes people it no longer needs through procedures presented as orderly and voluntary. In the Quietus, the elderly are sedated and drowned in ceremonies framed as dignified choices, although some are coerced. Imported 'Sojourner' workers from poorer countries are used for labour and then expelled, and criminals are dumped on a lawless penal colony on the Isle of Man, so that ritual and administrative language hide the violence from the comfortable majority.

  4. Meaning Depends on an Imagined Posterity

Read the infertile world as a test of what human effort was for. With no one to inherit it, scholarship, building, art and history lose their purpose and become rituals or distractions. The frustrated urge to nurture moves onto substitutes, as women push dolls in prams and hold christenings for kittens. This shows how much everyday meaning quietly relies on the assumption that someone will come after us.
