1. The Merv host who refused recognition

   A man from Merv was often lavishly hosted by an Iraqi friend and kept urging him to visit Merv so he could return the favour. When the Iraqi finally arrived, the Merv man pretended not to know him, and as the guest removed his turban, then his cloak, to be recognized, the host said that even if he stepped out of his skin he would not know him. The joke shows that reciprocity promised at a distance costs nothing, and that the miser escapes the debt by refusing to admit the relationship exists.

2. Al-Kindi charges tenants for their guests

   He itemized the costs: visitors draw more well water, wear out doors and stairs, crowd the rooms and fill the privy. The episode shows the miser's method of turning a social good into a list of measurable depreciation costs, which makes generosity look like a hidden subsidy.

3. Misers argue from reason and virtue

   The misers are not shown as mere hoarders. In letters such as Sahl ibn Harun's, they defend thrift with appeals to prudence, scripture, the fate of heirs and the folly of spendthrifts, and they call their critics' generosity vanity and waste. The comedy works because each argument is locally sound, while the conclusion still serves the speaker's appetite to keep what he has.

4. Stinginess as a shared discipline

   Al-Jahiz shows Basran misers gathering in the mosque to trade techniques: saving lamp oil, making clothes last longer, cutting what food and drink they give away. Seen this way, miserliness is a subculture with its own experts, peer esteem and body of knowledge, and the group keeps the habit going by rewarding ingenuity in withholding.

5. Laughter is a legitimate instructive tool

   Al-Jahiz defends his comic material against critics who think jesting unworthy of serious people. He argues that laughter relaxes the mind, is natural and permitted, and that absurd examples teach more vividly than sermons.
