1. Romand's eighteen-year fake WHO career

   In 1975 Jean-Claude Romand skipped his second-year medical exam in Lyon but told everyone he had passed. For eighteen years he posed as a WHO research doctor in Geneva, spending his days in car parks, motorway rest areas, cafés and forests, and funding his family's life by embezzling relatives' savings that he claimed to be investing in Swiss accounts. In January 1993, facing exposure, he killed his wife with a rolling pin, shot his two children and then his parents, tried to kill his mistress, set his house on fire and survived.

2. The lie that forecloses its own confession

   A small initial lie, such as not admitting to a missed exam, becomes harder to retract with each day it survives, because confessing would now mean revealing every day of lying, not just the original act. The cost of the truth grows faster than the cost of the next lie, so the deceiver keeps building until the only way left to avoid discovery is to destroy the people who would discover it.

3. The empty centre behind the mask

   Investigators and the author looked for a hidden double life behind Romand's fake career, such as espionage, trafficking or a secret identity, and found nothing: his days were spent idling and waiting. Seen this way, the false self was not a cover for a real self but a replacement for one. The mask had nothing behind it, and that emptiness is more disturbing than any secret would have been.

4. The narrator cannot stand outside the monster

   Carrère abandoned his attempts to write from inside Romand's head or as a detached observer. Instead he wrote in the first person about his own fascination and his possible complicity in giving Romand the audience he craved. He argues that an honest account of such a person must also question the teller's motives, including his doubt about whether Romand's prison conversion to Christianity was sincere or simply one more performance.
