1. The Geometry Book With His Mother's Name

   On his first day of high school on the Spokane reservation, Junior opens his assigned geometry textbook and finds his own mother's maiden name written inside, which means the school is still using books at least thirty years old. He throws it and breaks his teacher Mr. P's nose. Mr. P then visits him at home, admits that teachers like him were once told to 'kill the Indian to save the child,' and urges Junior to leave the reservation because staying means losing hope. That push is what sends Junior to the all-white Reardan High School 22 miles away.

2. Poverty Teaches You Deserve Poverty

   The book argues that poverty does not build character or resilience. Its real lesson is that you and your family are destined to stay poor, because you watch your parents' dreams die for lack of money and learn to expect the same. Junior's father shoots the family's sick dog Oscar because they cannot afford a vet, and Junior concludes that this lack of choice is the mechanism that turns scarcity into self-belief.

3. Leaving Is Read as Betrayal

   In a community bound together by shared hardship, one member's attempt to escape is treated as a rejection of everyone who stays, not as an individual choice. Junior's tribe calls him a traitor and an 'apple' (red outside, white inside). His best friend Rowdy punches him and becomes his enemy. The cost of upward mobility is paid in the relationships the mobility is meant to honor.

4. Identity as Membership in Many Tribes

   Junior stops treating identity as a single fixed membership that forces him to choose between Indian and white. Instead, he lists himself as belonging to many overlapping tribes at once: Spokane Indians, cartoonists, basketball players, bookworms, the poor, and those who have lost loved ones. Seen this way, the loneliness of being between two worlds becomes access to several, and no single group can revoke his whole self.
