  1. Self-deprecation as humiliation, not humility

When someone who already sits on the margins mocks themselves for laughs, it is not humility. It is permission for the audience to laugh at them, and it confirms the audience's low view of them. The comic earns applause by agreeing publicly with the contempt they already face. Over time, performing that agreement turns it into self-belief.

  2. Late diagnosis rewrites the life story

Gadsby was diagnosed with autism and ADHD in adulthood. The diagnosis let them reread decades of confusion, social failure and exhaustion as a mismatch between their neurology and the world, not as personal defects. Masking, the constant copying of expected behavior to pass as typical, turns out to be a hidden cost behind much of that exhaustion and self-blame. Naming it makes self-understanding possible after the fact.
