1. Sabotage and Murder Aboard Orbital Solar Station

   Aboard a Japanese solar-power station that beams collected sunlight to Earth as microwaves, a crew death and a string of sabotage incidents leave the small international crew cut off from ground support. The station's security chief, an outsider to the Japanese-run operation, has to find the saboteur among colleagues he lives beside while systems fail around them. His goal is to stop the station from being turned toward catastrophe.

2. Energy Infrastructure Is Always Latent Weaponry

   A system built to deliver concentrated energy over distance, such as a microwave power beam, is physically indistinguishable from a directed-energy weapon. Only its aiming, controls and the intent of whoever holds them separate the two. The danger is built into the physics, so safety rests entirely on who controls the system, not on what it was meant to do.
