   A tightly bound community under the stress of unexplained death will converge on a plausible outsider or misfit as the guilty party, because collective relief matters more than accuracy. Once that consensus forms, contrary evidence is suppressed or ignored to protect the shared story and the people it shields.

2. Reading a present crime as the echo of a buried one

   Treat a fresh act of violence not as a standalone event but as a symptom of an unresolved past crime whose participants are still present and still invested in concealment. Viewed this way, each new victim marks someone who knew or was about to expose what really happened long ago.
