1. Tanzanian orphan crosses border seeking father

   Msanifu Kombo, born out of wedlock in Tanga, Tanzania, is raised by his single mother, a gifted taarab singer, and is mocked by schoolmates for having no known father. When she dies he is left alone, and he travels across the border to western Kenya to find the biological father he has never met. The novel is narrated in the first person by the grown son looking back on this search.

2. Illegitimacy as stigma inherited by the child

   In a culture that condemns birth outside marriage, the child carries the parents' transgression as a public mark, even though he did nothing. Peers enforce the stigma through daily taunting, so exclusion is administered by other children rather than by formal authority. The child's status is set before he acts, and he must live inside a verdict passed on someone else.
