Social cohesion is treated as a substance that flows in from outside a community, not as a trait its members possess. When the flow is cut, as when Canopus's cosmic 'Lock' with Shikasta slips out of alignment, people fall into 'the Degenerative Disease': selfishness, greed, shortened lives and forgetting of purpose. On this view, moral decline is a shortage of the connecting substance, and exhortation cannot fix it because the supply problem remains.
In the novel's near-future, Johor lives on Earth as George Sherban. He helps stage a vast public trial in which youth armies from the formerly colonized world indict white Europeans for colonialism, slavery and plunder. The indictment stands, but the event releases collective grievance without turning into retaliatory massacre.
The novel narrates the twentieth century through an off-world archive of clinical reports. Seen that way, wars, nationalisms and competing ideologies stop reading as a contest of ideas. They read as symptoms of one underlying disorder, a species that has forgotten what it is for. The detached register exposes how much of what participants experience as principled conviction is patterned, repetitive and self-destructive behaviour.
Canopean agents who come to rescue Shikasta cannot stay outside it. Their mission holds only through deliberate effort, reminders and contact with other agents, and some of them fail and are absorbed into the degeneration. Anyone who intervenes inside a corrupting system is subject to the same pull as the people they came to help.
