  1. Weather changes within metres

Weather is not one condition spread evenly over a whole country. It shifts as you walk around a tree, cross a wood or turn down a street. The two sides of a single tree never have identical weather, and the sky ahead of you rarely matches the sky behind you.

  2. The sky maps the land

Air and sunlight react to the shapes of hills, trees and buildings. That reaction leaves visible marks in clouds, wind and temperature. So a patterned sky can tell you about the ground beneath it, including ground you cannot see.

  3. Signs do four different jobs

Small weather clues are not all forecasts. Some act as a map of the surroundings, some show what the air is doing right now, some predict what is coming, and some record what has already happened. Asking which job a sign is doing is the first step to reading it correctly.

  4. Learn signs like characters

A weather sign becomes meaningful when you treat it like a person whose habits you study: when it appears, how it behaves, and what usually follows. A list of memorised rules gives you less than this. Watching the same signs again and again lets their meaning reveal itself.

  5. Clues hide in plain sight

We pass dozens of small weather signs every day in plants, animals, dew, frost and breezes. Most people, even seasoned outdoor people, never register them. Once someone knows what to look for, these signs are easy to spot, and anyone can forecast the near future for themselves.
