1. Carla's Aborted Bus Escape in 'Runaway'

   Carla, a young wife stuck in a failing horse-boarding business with her moody husband Clark, is helped by her neighbour Sylvia, a widow, to board a bus for Toronto with money and clothes. Partway there, she realizes she cannot picture a life without Clark to push against, gets off, and phones him to come and get her. Later she suspects Clark killed Flora, the pet goat that had strangely reappeared, and deliberately never walks to the spot in the woods where she might find out.

The mechanism is avoidance of evidence, not lack of evidence, and it lets the person tolerate a life that certainty would make unbearable.
