1. Terror works by making ordinary life unreadable

   The novel shows that political terror does its work less through set-piece massacres than by making the familiar city illegible. Streets, routines and signals that once meant safety or normality stop meaning anything, so ordinary people cannot predict what will get them killed. That uncertainty spreads fear far beyond the people who are directly targeted.

2. Lost footsteps: movement without arrival

   A 'salle des pas perdus' is a waiting hall where people pace without getting anywhere, and the title turns the whole city into one. The concept names a condition in which constant motion replaces agency, and endurance substitutes for escape.
