1. Empathic Projection as a Costly Investigative Tool

   Will Graham solves cases by reconstructing a crime scene from the killer's point of view until he can think the killer's thoughts, turning physical evidence into inferred motive and next moves. The same faculty that makes him effective contaminates him: adopting a murderer's perspective erodes the boundary between hunter and hunted. Lecter exploits this by telling Graham he caught him because they are alike, so the investigator's own psyche becomes a vulnerability.

2. The Home Movies That Linked the Victims

   Francis Dolarhyde murders two families, the Leeds in Atlanta and the Jacobis in Birmingham, on nights of the full moon. He knows their houses and routines in advance because he works at a St. Louis film-processing lab and chose them from the home movies they sent in for developing. Graham breaks the case after studying the families' home movies and realizing the killer must have seen that footage, so the one link between unconnected victims was a hidden intermediary with access to their private images.

3. Violence as a Performance of Becoming

   Dolarhyde, disfigured by a cleft palate and abused as a child by his grandmother, builds a private identity around William Blake's painting of the Great Red Dragon and treats each murder as a step in his 'Becoming.' He places mirror shards in his victims' eyes so they seem to watch him, because the transformation requires witnesses who see him as the Dragon. His later tenderness toward Reba McClane, a blind woman who cannot see his face, splits that identity, showing that the fantasy depends on controlling how he is seen.

4. Publicity Baits the Killer and Endangers Others

   Press coverage of a manhunt cannot be aimed at one reader. Graham feeds the tabloid reporter Freddy Lounds a story insulting the 'Tooth Fairy' to draw him out, but Dolarhyde kidnaps Lounds and burns him to death instead. Lecter uses the same tabloid's personal ads to send Dolarhyde a coded message containing Graham's home address, so every signal broadcast to lure a killer also reaches enemies and puts bystanders at risk.
