Realms of Memory

Pierre Nora (ed.)

4 ideas

  1. Lieux de mémoire replace milieux de mémoire

When societies lose milieux de mémoire, the peasant villages, churches and families where memory was lived and passed on without reflection, they build lieux de mémoire in their place. These are deliberate sites such as monuments, archives, museums, anniversaries and emblems. Such sites exist because spontaneous memory no longer does, so their proliferation is a symptom of loss, not of remembrance.

  2. History and memory are fundamentally opposed

Memory is affective, absolute, carried by living groups, and in permanent evolution, while history is a critical, secular reconstruction of what no longer exists. History's job is to suspect and dismantle memory, so the rise of historical consciousness destroys the lived memory it studies.

  3. Archival obsession as memory outsourcing

Modern societies compulsively record and preserve everything because they no longer trust themselves to remember. The duty to remember then shifts from the group to external supports, and each individual is made responsible for guarding memory through archives, heritage and genealogy. The volume of stored traces measures how little memory is actually lived.

  4. Three dimensions of a memory site

A lieu de mémoire is material, symbolic and functional all at once. The dimensions can be a physical object, a charged meaning, or a ritual use, and the object may be a flag, a textbook, a minute of silence or a generation. A thing becomes such a site only when a will to remember invests it with symbolic surplus, which lets researchers study the nation through its symbols, not its events.
