1. Vladimiro Caposso's rise from functionary to magnate

   Vladimiro Caposso starts as an obscure, unremarkable functionary in the MPLA apparatus around independence in 1975 and becomes one of Luanda's millionaires over the next thirty years. He does it by attaching himself to the ruling party and trading access to officials for import licenses, contracts and land. He produces nothing of value. The novel jumps back and forth between the revolutionary 1970s and the oil-boom 2000s to show that the socialist functionary and the predatory capitalist are the same man.

2. Revolutionary ideology as a portable climbing tool

   For the predatory elite, Marxist-Leninist slogans were never convictions. They were the credential that got a person into the party-state and near its resources. When the regime moved to the market in the early 1990s, the same people dropped the ideology overnight and turned their political position into private ownership. What carried across the transition was loyalty networks and access, not beliefs.

3. Primitive accumulation through the state

   In a post-colonial petro-state, great fortunes are made mainly by capturing what the state controls: licenses, credit, land concessions, public contracts, and the guarantee of not being prosecuted. The entrepreneur's key skill is cultivating the officials who hand out rents, not building an enterprise. This gives wealth without production and pushes out honest businesspeople who compete on merit.

4. The new rich as colonizers' successors

   The novel invites readers to judge the post-independence elite by comparing how they treat ordinary people with how the colonial settlers treated them. On that test, the new elite comes out as an heir to the colonizers. It fences off land used by rural communities, including grazing land of pastoral herders in the south. It despises the poor and is served by the same kind of dispossession the liberation struggle fought against. The change in rulers' skin colour hides the fact that the pattern of extraction continued.
