1. Avey Johnson abandons cruise for Carriacou

   Avey Johnson, a comfortable sixty-four-year-old widow from North White Plains, leaves the cruise ship Bianca Pride mid-voyage after a disturbing dream of her great-aunt Cuney beckoning her toward Ibo Landing in Tatem, South Carolina. Stranded in Grenada, she meets the old rum-shop keeper Lebert Joseph, who persuades her to join the islanders' annual excursion to Carriacou. After a violent, purging seasickness on the crossing, she attends the Big Drum ceremony, where she cannot name her 'nation' but joins the dancers' shuffling step and resolves to go back to Tatem and pass the Ibo story on to her grandchildren.

2. Striving erodes the small sustaining rituals

   Upward mobility destroys a family's identity by gradually dropping the unprofitable private practices that fed it, not through any single dramatic betrayal. For Avey and Jerome these were Sunday jazz records, dancing in the living room, reciting Langston Hughes and Dunbar, and summer trips south. As Jerome worked himself toward security, those habits fell away and the warm 'Jay' hardened into the grim 'Mr. Johnson' Avey sees in his coffin. The material gains were real, but so was what they cost.

3. Ibo Landing as ancestral refusal

   Aunt Cuney's story tells of enslaved Ibos who were brought ashore in Tatem, saw what awaited them, and walked back across the water toward Africa. In the story, collective memory works as an active refusal of the captor's version of events rather than as nostalgia. Whoever inherits the story is charged with carrying it forward, and Avey's mid-life crisis is framed as the late collection on that childhood charge.

4. Fragments kept outlast the knowledge lost

   As Lebert Joseph frames it, they keep 'the bits and pieces' even when their origins are forgotten. Seen this way, a practice's continuity does not depend on anyone understanding it. The form carries belonging on its own, so a person who has lost the facts can re-enter the lineage by doing what was kept.
