1. Early death preserves a genius's reputation

   Much of a Romantic poet's mythic standing comes from dying young, because death freezes the rebellious, youthful self at its peak. Posthumous fame therefore partly rewards the absence of a disappointing later career.

2. The unreliable madman as truthful observer

   Putting a counterfactual inside the mind of a declared lunatic lets the author voice deflating truths about revered figures while disowning them as delusion. Because the reader dismisses the frame, the reader lowers their guard, so the satire lands harder. P.'s confusion of the living with the dead exposes how arbitrary the public's canonisation of authors is.
