A working woman, writing under the pseudonym Barbara O'Brien, woke one morning to find ghostly figures at her bedside who called themselves Operators, with one named Hinton at their head. Following their instructions, she quit her job and spent roughly six months crisscrossing the United States by Greyhound bus while the Operators argued, directed, and tested her. She then wrote a detailed account of both the episode and the recovery.
The delusion arrived as a complete cosmology. A small class of Operators covertly links into and manipulates the minds of ordinary people, the Things, who never realize they are being steered. She held a special status as a Thing who could perceive the Operators. That status made her the object of their attention and experiments, and it explained to her why her own perceptions differed from everyone else's.
In hindsight, O'Brien argues that her episode was her unconscious mind working through an intolerable life situation, centered on a conflict-ridden job she could not consciously face leaving. The Operators pulled her out of that situation and kept her occupied while the underlying problem was resolved beneath awareness. In her account, recovery came when that hidden work was finished, not from outside intervention.
Throughout the episode she kept a partial observing self that questioned, tested, and memorized what the Operators said. Her reasoning stayed coherent even though the premises feeding it were hallucinated. On this view, psychosis is intact reasoning building a consistent world from false perceptions rather than a total collapse of reason. This explains both the delusion's internal plausibility and why she could later reconstruct it clearly.
