Prompt forms over the universal book
Benjamin argues that the construction of life is currently governed by facts far more than by convictions. Opinions are to social life what oil is to machines: applied only at the right joints, not poured over the whole apparatus. Writing that wants to be effective should therefore take quick, occasional forms such as leaflets, brochures, articles and placards, rather than the pretentious, universal gesture of the complete book.
