One Minute Wisdom

Anthony de Mello

4 ideas

  1. Enlightenment is awareness, not new knowledge

The Master insists that what disciples seek cannot be added through doctrine, effort, or accumulated information; it is a matter of seeing what is already present. Liberation comes from dropping illusions rather than acquiring truths, so the teacher's role is to point, not to supply answers.

  2. The label is not the thing

Words, concepts, and scriptures are like a finger pointing at the moon or a menu mistaken for the meal: useful only if you look past them. Clinging to the description of reality, including religious formulas, blocks direct contact with reality itself.

  3. Stories as a jolt past defenses

A brief parable slips past the intellect's resistance because the listener enjoys it before realizing it describes them. The instruction is to read each story repeatedly, sit with it silently, and let it expose one's own behavior rather than admire its point about others.

  4. Suffering comes from attachments and programming

Unhappiness is produced not by events but by the demands and beliefs one clings to, many absorbed unconsciously from culture and upbringing. When a person sees an attachment clearly for what it is, its grip dissolves without the need for struggle or willpower.
