  1. The River versus the Village

Silver splits elite culture into two tribes. The River is analytical, competitive, contrarian risk-takers who think in expected value: poker players, sports bettors, venture capitalists, crypto traders and effective altruists. The Village is the institutional establishment of media, government and academia, which prizes consensus, credentials and reputational safety, so many political and cultural fights are really clashes between these two ways of handling uncertainty.

  2. Sam Bankman-Fried's double-or-nothing coin flips

Bankman-Fried, founder of the crypto exchange FTX, told interviewers he would take a coin flip that either doubled the world's value or destroyed it, if the odds slightly favored doubling. He treated linear expected-value maximization as a moral duty and ignored the risk of ruin. FTX's collapse in November 2022, after customer funds were funneled to his trading firm Alameda Research, showed what happens when someone keeps taking positive-EV bets with no stop-loss.

  3. Size bets to survive: Kelly and ruin

Having an edge is not enough. You must size each wager so that a run of bad luck cannot wipe you out, which is why disciplined gamblers bet a fraction of their bankroll roughly proportional to their edge, as the Kelly criterion prescribes. Maximizing expected value on each bet while ignoring variance leads to near-certain bankruptcy over repeated plays, because a single loss to zero ends the game.

  4. Venture capital's power law shifts risk to founders

Venture returns follow a power law: a few huge winners pay for many failures, so VCs spread capital across many startups and rationally encourage extreme, swing-for-the-fences risk-taking. A founder has one company and cannot diversify, so the aggressive bets that are positive-EV for the fund's portfolio can be poor bets for the individual. The system selects for founders who are risk-tolerant, even irrationally so.
