1. Time-displaced astronauts relearn purpose in utopia

   Sergei Kondratyev and Evgeny Slavin, crew of a starship launched a century earlier, return through relativistic time dilation to 22nd-century Earth. Nobody needs them and nothing is scarce, so they must find a reason to act in a society where survival and wages no longer drive anyone. Kondratyev eventually finds footing in the Ocean Guard, doing hands-on work that tends the planet's seas. The episode shows that outsiders to abundance have to relearn motivation as chosen vocation rather than necessity.

2. Creative work becomes life's primary satisfaction

   Once material want is removed, the book holds that people do not sink into idleness. Instead they turn to demanding, freely chosen work: research, exploration, engineering and teaching. Work stops being a cost paid for consumption and becomes the main source of identity and joy, so the social problem shifts from making people work to helping each person find their calling.

3. Upbringing as society's central institution

   In this future, children are raised in boarding schools under dedicated personal teachers, and the teacher is treated as the most important profession. Each child is guided toward a vocation that fits them. The mechanism of utopia is not technology but deliberate moral and intellectual formation, which produces adults for whom curiosity, cooperation and responsibility are habits rather than rules.

4. Solved material problems leave ethical dilemmas

   When hunger, war and scarcity are gone, the remaining conflicts are clashes between goods rather than fights over resources. Examples include how much risk is acceptable in the pursuit of knowledge, whether to preserve a dying mind in a machine, and whether to kill or study an unknown creature. Looking at a society this way shows that progress does not end drama. It moves drama from survival to conscience.
