1. Pairing what was done with its cost

   The book is organized around two questions to each veteran: what they did in the war, and what it cost them. Asking both keeps war from being told only as achievement or only as suffering, because each speaker must account for their actions and their losses in the same telling.

2. Ordinary testimony can found a genre

   By publishing unedited first-person accounts from unknown people through a mainstream press, the book showed Vietnamese readers that oral history is a legitimate form of literature and history. Its repeated printings are evidence that there was demand for war memory told from below rather than through official heroic narrative.
