As teenagers in the late 1820s, Herzen and his friend Nikolai Ogarev stood on the Sparrow Hills above Moscow at sunset and swore to sacrifice their lives to the struggle for freedom. They were inspired by the executed Decembrists of 1825. The friendship and the vow held for the rest of both men's lives, through arrest, exile and their joint emigrant press in London, and show how a single adolescent commitment can organize an entire political biography.
In 1834 Herzen was arrested after friends sang songs mocking the Tsar at a party he did not attend, and he was held for months without real evidence. He was then exiled to Perm and Vyatka, where he served as a clerk in the provincial bureaucracy. He recorded its routine corruption, bribery and petty tyranny from the inside, showing autocracy's arbitrariness as ordinary administration rather than dramatic cruelty.
After watching the June Days of 1848, when the French republic shot down Paris workers, Herzen concluded that Western liberals wanted political liberty only as long as it protected property. Once workers demanded social change, the middle class would choose order and even dictatorship over freedom. His disillusion with the West led him to place revolutionary hope in the Russian peasant commune, the idea that became the seed of Russian populism.
Herzen treats any doctrine that justifies present suffering by a future goal, whether Progress, History or the Revolution, as a new form of religious idolatry. On this view each generation and each living person is an end in itself, not fertilizer for a later utopia, and history has no script or libretto guaranteeing an outcome. Applying the lens means asking of any political program whose concrete lives it is willing to spend now, and on what authority.
