  1. Murder over the Sultan's secret Frankish book

In 1591 Istanbul, Sultan Murad III secretly commissions Enishte Effendi to have the court miniaturists (Elegant, Butterfly, Stork, Olive) illustrate a book in the Venetian manner, with perspective and a realistic portrait of the Sultan at its center. Elegant Effendi, fearing the project is blasphemous, threatens to expose it and is murdered; Enishte is killed next, and the killer turns out to be Olive, a master whose devotion to the old style had already been corrupted by his hunger for Frankish fame and individuality. Master Osman, head of the workshop, blinds himself with the needle once used to blind Bihzad rather than live to see the tradition dissolve.

  2. Perspective and portraiture relocate the seeing eye

Venetian perspective and portraiture put the human viewer's position and the individual face at the center, and that shift in technique amounts to a theological and political claim about whose view of the world counts. Adopting it is therefore not a neutral stylistic upgrade but a conversion of worldview.

  3. Style as flaw, blindness as mastery

The old masters hold that a personal style or signature is an imperfection, a defect that shows the artist's ego instead of the perfected tradition, so the ideal painter is anonymous and indistinguishable from his predecessors. Blindness after a lifetime of painting is treated as the summit of mastery, because the painter can then draw purely from memory, the way God remembers the world. The murderer is caught by a tiny idiosyncrasy in how he draws a horse's nostrils, which shows that individuality leaks through even when it is forbidden.

  4. Chorus of narrators, including objects

Each chapter is narrated by a different voice: lovers, the murderer under two identities, a corpse, and painted or abstract things such as a tree, a coin, Death, and the color red. Truth is assembled from partial and competing testimonies rather than handed down from a single authority, the same way meaning in a miniature comes from its place within the story it illustrates. The form itself stages the book's conflict between a collective, God's-eye vision and individual, situated points of view.
