On the day in 2001 that Indra Nooyi learned she would become PepsiCo's president and join its board, she rushed home to share the news. Before she could, her mother sent her back out to buy milk. When Nooyi protested, her mother told her that whatever she was at PepsiCo, at home she was a wife, mother and daughter, and she should leave the crown in the garage.
Nooyi's 2006 reorientation of PepsiCo tied long-term shareholder returns to three commitments. Human sustainability meant shifting the portfolio from 'fun-for-you' snacks and soda toward 'better-for-you' and 'good-for-you' products. Environmental sustainability meant cutting water, packaging and energy use, and talent sustainability meant building an organisation people want to stay in. She argued these as anticipations of where regulation, consumer taste and resource costs were heading, not as charity.
After a visit to her mother's home in India, where relatives and neighbours congratulated her parents rather than her, Nooyi began writing personal letters to the parents of her senior executives. The letters thanked them for the child they had raised and described that child's work at PepsiCo. Many parents replied with emotion, and executives reported it as among the most meaningful recognition they had received, because it credited their family and not just their output.
Nooyi argues that the collision between peak career years and peak childbearing and caregiving years is a structural problem, not a matter of individual grit. Without paid leave, flexible work and affordable, high-quality childcare and eldercare, economies lose talent, especially women's, that they have already invested in. Her own reliance on extended family and paid help, and what she still missed of her daughters' lives, is offered as proof that even the best-resourced individual cannot solve this alone.
