Mismatch

  1. Mismatch as the unit of exclusion

Disability is not a personal health condition but a mismatched interaction between a body and a designed environment; the exclusion lives in the design, not in the person. Reframing exclusion this way makes it a solvable design problem rather than a fixed trait of the user.

  2. Designers build to their own abilities

People tend to design solutions that work for people like themselves, so a homogeneous group of makers unconsciously encodes its own abilities and biases as the default user. The resulting products exclude anyone whose body or circumstances differ from the designers' unexamined baseline.

  3. Match persona ability to design

Inclusive design distinguishes permanent, temporary, and situational mismatches: someone may have one arm permanently, a broken arm temporarily, or be holding a baby situationally. Designing for the permanent extreme produces solutions that also serve the far larger temporary and situational populations.

  4. Solve for one, extend to many

Starting from the needs of people most acutely excluded (solving for one) yields features that then benefit the broader population (extending to many). The curb cut built for wheelchairs also serves strollers, luggage, and delivery carts.

  5. Excluded people as expert guides

People who experience exclusion develop deep expertise in workarounds and adaptations, making them sources of design insight rather than merely recipients of help. Treating them as collaborators and experts, not as problems to fix, changes what solutions become visible.

  6. Microsoft Xbox Adaptive Controller

Gamers with limited mobility could not use standard controllers, so a team worked directly with disabled players to build a reconfigurable controller with large programmable buttons and ports for external switches. The product shows inclusive design shipping as a mainstream commercial object, not a niche medical device.
