In a drought-stricken Haitian village, a peasant returns home after fifteen years cutting cane in Cuba, carrying new ideas about solidarity. To save the parched plain he must mend an old feud dividing the community—and find common cause with a woman from the opposing side.

  1. Revive old traditions of cooperation

To rebuild trust in a divided group, appeal to its own memory of times it worked together, such as farmers' collective work parties where neighbours helped each other. A new cooperative project can then be framed as returning to that tradition on a bigger scale, a gathering that clears out poverty and plants a new life.

  2. Common need won't end feuds

Even a plain shared benefit, like water for a whole parched village, is not enough to make old enemies cooperate. Inherited grudges outweigh the promise of prosperity, so a plan that needs everyone fails while the community stays split into sides.

  3. Producers don't know their power

The people who plant, water and harvest are what a country actually runs on, yet they stay poor because they don't yet see what a single force they would be if they all acted together. Their weakness comes from not knowing their combined strength, not from lacking it.

  4. Fatalism keeps people stuck

When people read drought and hardship as the will of forces greater than themselves, they wait and pray instead of acting, and the disaster wins by default. Their resignation, rooted in ignorance and religious acceptance, blinds them to how much shared action could change what looks like fixed fate.

  5. Mastery means shaping your destiny

Being master of your life does not come from owning resources but from having the understanding and the means to act on your own fate. The ideal is land cleared by your own arms, with freedom limited only by the weather, and even the poorest can get there through learning and joint effort.
