They find her aged and obscure in a small town, and on the same day, in a fight with Lupe's pimp and a corrupt policeman, Cesárea is killed while shielding Lima and the two men die. The object of the literary quest is destroyed at the moment of finding, and Belano and Lima then scatter into twenty years of exile and drift.
The novel never gives Belano and Lima an interior voice after the opening diary. For twenty years they appear only through more than fifty witnesses who each saw a fragment, and many of those witnesses are unreliable, self-serving, or talking mostly about themselves. Seen this way, a person's identity is the sum of partial, contradictory accounts that others give, and the gaps between accounts become the portrait.
The visceral realists define themselves against the literary establishment, embodied by Octavio Paz. They shoplift books, disrupt readings and refuse institutional recognition. The novel shows the same refusal leaving its members poor, dispersed, forgotten or dead, so that the rebellious stance meant to protect poetry's integrity becomes indistinguishable from failure and oblivion. Bolaño treats this cost with tenderness rather than contempt, as the true price of taking literature absolutely seriously.
The book opens with García Madero's diary, from November to December 1975, and then cuts to decades of testimonies. It closes by returning to the diary in the desert in early 1976, so the events that set everything in motion are revealed last. The chronological cause arrives after its effects are already known, and the ending therefore reads as an explanation of the scattered lives already witnessed, not as a climax. The diary ends with a riddle-drawing of a window, leaving the explanation itself open.
