Violence cannot sustain itself openly for long, so it covers itself with the lie: ideology, slogans, and official language make coercion look legitimate. The lie in turn survives only because violence stands behind it. Break the lie and violence loses its cover and its ability to reproduce itself.
Unlike tanks or prisons, the official lie cannot operate without ordinary people voicing, signing, applauding, and repeating it. That makes the lie the regime's weakest link, because each individual can withdraw from it without any organization, weapons, or permission. When people stop taking part, the lie has nothing left to run on.
The demand is not to proclaim the truth, go to the square, or confront the state. It is only to not say what you do not believe. Setting the bar at abstention rather than action removes the excuse that resistance is only for heroes.
Principle becomes behavior through specific refusals: do not write, sign, or print any phrase that distorts the truth; do not attend meetings or demonstrations against your will; do not raise your hand for resolutions you reject; do not vote for unworthy candidates. Also leave any meeting or lecture where the lie is spoken, and refuse to subscribe to or pay for publications that falsify facts. Each item is a small, testable daily choice rather than a general stance.
Telling ourselves that nothing depends on us, or that we cannot oppose the system, is the attitude that keeps the system running. Anyone who is unwilling even to stop lying has no ground to complain. Such a person has chosen cowardice and deserves the contempt reserved for those unfit for freedom.
A single refuser may lose a job, a degree, or a comfortable life, and the essay openly accepts these costs. But the state cannot punish a mass of quiet refusals the way it crushes one open rebel. As honest people multiply, the lie becomes impossible to enforce and the refusers are no longer alone.
