1. Mattia abandons his twin in the park

   In Turin, young Mattia is embarrassed by his mentally disabled twin sister Michela, so he leaves her on a park bench and tells her to wait while he goes alone to a classmate's birthday party. When he returns she is gone and is never found, and Mattia grows up cutting his own hands, withdrawing from people and retreating into mathematics. A single small act of childish shame becomes a permanent, unresolvable guilt because the loss has no body, no explanation and no ending.

2. Twin primes as model of intimacy

   Twin primes, such as 11 and 13, are primes separated by a single even number. They are as close as two primes can be, yet they can never touch, and they grow rarer the further along the number line one goes. The novel applies this to two wounded people: their shared damage makes them uniquely suited to each other, but the same damage keeps a fixed gap between them that proximity alone cannot close.

3. Unprocessed trauma is punished on the body

   Children who cannot voice their guilt or shame redirect it onto their own flesh as a form of control and self-punishment. Mattia cuts his hands and Alice starves herself. Alice's case is especially pointed: her father forced her to ski, and she was lamed in a fall in the fog, so she turns the body that was once imposed on her into the one thing she can govern. The self-harm is not a cry for attention but a private accounting system that keeps the original wound active and blocks others from reaching it.

4. Recognition without the capacity to act

   Two damaged people can recognize each other instantly and completely, and still fail to close the distance, because recognition is not the same as the ability to move. Years later Alice glimpses a woman who resembles Michela and calls Mattia back from abroad. Their reunion shows that understanding each other's wound does not by itself produce the courage or the words needed for closeness. Often each waits for the other to make the move neither can make.
