1. Lear divides kingdom by professed love

   The aged King Lear splits Britain among his three daughters according to how extravagantly each declares her love; Goneril and Regan flatter and receive shares, while Cordelia, who refuses to inflate her devotion ('Nothing, my lord'), is disinherited and banished along with Kent, who defends her. Once the land is transferred, Goneril and Regan strip Lear of his knights and shut him out into a storm, where he goes mad; Cordelia returns with a French army to rescue him, is captured, and is hanged, and Lear dies over her body.

2. Rewarding declarations selects for liars

   When a ruler allocates resources by public professions of loyalty, he builds an incentive that favors those willing to say whatever is required and penalizes those whose honesty makes them unwilling to perform. The sincere are excluded because their sincerity limits what they will say, so the test reliably filters for the people least deserving of trust. Lear's 'Nothing will come of nothing' expresses the transactional logic that destroys him.

3. Edmund's self-justifying villainy from illegitimacy

   Edmund, Gloucester's bastard son, invokes 'Nature' against the 'plague of custom' that brands him base, and uses that grievance as license to forge a letter framing his legitimate brother Edgar and later to betray his father to be blinded. His stated motive is real but out of all proportion to what he does; the grievance serves as a rationale for ambition rather than its cause. He is charming, candid with the audience, and remorseless until a late, partial reversal.

4. Blindness and madness as routes to sight

   The play pairs physical and mental collapse with moral perception: Gloucester sees his error only after his eyes are put out ('I stumbled when I saw'), and Lear grasps the suffering of 'poor naked wretches' and the hollowness of authority only once he is mad and homeless on the heath. The lens proposes that status and comfort cut people off from truth, and that stripping them away is what exposes it, at a cost too high to repair the damage already done.
