  1. The dead who still inhabit the living

A character who dies can remain the most vivid presence in the survivors' lives, so that the living move through their days diminished, half-attending to a person no longer there. The dead are described not as absent but as returning, visiting, and holding more reality than the people still breathing.

  2. Nostalgia is desire for a place, not people

What the uprooted long for is not lost relationships but a specific physical setting where the self was once whole: a particular house, garden, and street. The loss that cannot be recovered is topographical, a longing to be somewhere rather than with someone.

  3. A life measured against one withheld gesture

A single failure to act, a door not opened in a decisive moment, can be reread for the rest of a life as the hinge on which everything turned. The lens treats one small omission as carrying the full weight of a death and all the decades after it.
