1. Journalist Will Farnaby Shipwrecked on Pala

   Will Farnaby, a cynical journalist secretly working for oil magnate Joe Aldehyde, is shipwrecked on Pala while trying to broker oil concessions, and is gradually won over by the islanders' way of life. Pala refuses oil extraction and heavy industrialisation, so neighbouring Rendang's dictator Colonel Dipa, allied with Pala's young heir Murugan, invades at the end and installs a 'progressive' regime built on oil revenue. The episode is a test case for whether a small society optimised for wellbeing rather than growth can survive surrounded by resource-hungry states.

2. Mynah Birds Trained to Say Attention

   Pala's mynah birds are trained to call out 'Attention' and 'Here and now, boys', turning the environment itself into a mindfulness prompt. The mechanism is an external cue that interrupts habitual daydreaming and rumination and returns the hearer to present experience. It treats awareness as a trainable habit that a society can build into its surroundings, rather than a private spiritual achievement.

3. Moksha Medicine Within a Guided Practice

   Palanese take a psilocybin-like mushroom, moksha-medicine, at rites of passage and at moments of crisis or dying. It is always given within a structured setting of guidance, meditation and communal meaning, never as recreation or escape. The claim is that a psychedelic produces lasting insight only when it is embedded in preparation, supervision and integration practices; the drug opens the experience and the practice makes it useful.

4. Education of Body and Perception

   Pala educates children in both halves of the human dual nature: alongside science and abstract symbols, they learn direct perception, body awareness, emotional regulation and practical ecology. Its institutions follow the same logic, from Mutual Adoption Clubs that spread childrearing across many households to maithuna, a practice of mindful sexuality, with contraception and artificial insemination separating sex from reproduction. The argument is that social ills come from educating only the verbal intellect, and that a sane society trains the whole psychophysical organism.
