1. Archaeologist excavating Harappa returns to Khandesh

   Khanderao, a young archaeologist working at a Harappan excavation site in Mohenjo-daro's region, finds his professional digging into ancient layers repeatedly interrupted by memories and news of his home village in Khandesh (Morgaon), including his father's illness and death. The novel moves between the dig and the village's castes, farming cycles, kinship obligations and funeral rites. The present-day village becomes a second excavation site in which the continuity he studies abstractly is lived.

2. The home village as stratified site

   Treat one's own locality as an archaeological mound where present customs sit atop and incorporate older ones, rather than as a backward place to escape. Seen this way, caste arrangements, food habits and funerals become evidence of long-duration social layering, both its richness and its accumulated injustices. The observer is also an artifact of the site, which makes detachment impossible.
