1. Twenty-Five Cromwell Street, Gloucester

   Fred and Rosemary West killed young women, including lodgers, a family nanny and their own daughter Heather, and buried them in the cellar, under the bathroom and in the garden of 25 Cromwell Street. Fred had earlier buried his stepdaughter Charmaine and first wife Rena elsewhere. The house was excavated in 1994 after years of a family 'joke' that Heather was 'under the patio'; Fred hanged himself in prison on 1 January 1995, and Rose was convicted of ten murders later that year.

2. Home improvement as the architecture of concealment

   Fred West's compulsive building work, digging, extending and converting rooms, was both his habit and the means of hiding the bodies. Because renovation was a constant visible feature of the household, lodgers and neighbours read disturbance of floors and gardens as DIY rather than burial. Crime hidden inside an ordinary domestic routine becomes invisible because the routine explains every trace it leaves.

3. Monstering language lets readers disown atrocity

   Tabloid vocabulary such as 'House of Horrors' casts killers as alien monsters, which lets readers treat the crimes as having nothing to do with the world they live in. Rendering the Wests in flat, exact, unsensational detail about lodgers, sex work, benefits, children and building jobs forces the recognition that the killing grew out of a recognisable social world. Register is itself a moral choice about whether the reader may look away.

4. Normalisation of atrocity inside closed families

   In a sealed household, abuse and violence become ordinary routine, and children raised inside them learn it as simply how family life works. Horror is then absorbed into family idiom, as with the running joke about Heather under the patio, and loyalty or fear keeps it inside the walls. When the West children declined to testify in 1993, the abuse case against their parents collapsed. Outside agencies repeatedly touched the family without breaking the closed world open.
