1. The scout who avenged a disgraced scholar

   At Shrewsbury College, Oxford, obscene letters, defaced books and wrecked manuscripts terrorise the dons, and the culprit turns out to be Annie Wilson, a college servant. Her husband, Arthur Robinson, had lost his degree and career after the historian Miss de Vine exposed that he had concealed a document disproving his thesis, and he later killed himself. Annie blamed the women scholars, whom she saw as heartless and unnatural, and set out to punish the college for valuing truth above a man's livelihood and family.

2. Intellectual integrity outranks personal loyalty and consequence

   Suppressing inconvenient evidence is the unforgivable scholarly sin, because a discipline's authority depends on every practitioner putting fact before self-interest or kindness. The dons conclude that exposing a falsifier is right even when it destroys him and harms his dependants, since shielding him would corrupt the shared enterprise of knowledge. Honest work done for its own sake is presented as the one loyalty that can be trusted.

3. Marriage possible only between independent equals

   Harriet refuses Peter repeatedly because accepting a rescuer's love would turn her into a dependant and a debtor. She can say yes only after he treats her as an equal: he respects her judgment and work, lets her take real risks in the investigation, and asks rather than protects. Read this way, a proposal is a test of whether each partner will leave the other's mind and vocation intact.

4. Honest fiction requires writing your own feelings

   Harriet's detective novel stalls because her characters are puzzle mechanisms, and Peter advises her to make the central figure a real person even if that means exposing her own experience. Plot ingenuity alone is shown to be a form of evasion, and a genre story becomes serious literature when the author risks emotional truth instead of hiding behind the puzzle.
