1. Abusers select victims whose testimony is discounted

   Predators inside care institutions target patients whose psychiatric diagnoses already mark them as unreliable witnesses. The label that brings a person into care also guarantees that, if they accuse staff, the accusation will be read as a symptom rather than as evidence. Institutional power works by pre-discrediting the only people positioned to see the abuse.

2. Turning the discrediting machinery against the abuser

   Maureen cannot get Farrell convicted through legitimate channels. The lens shows that credibility is not a fixed trait of a person but something a system assigns, and whoever understands that machinery can aim it in either direction.

3. Family denial makes the victim the problem

   Her breakdown is then treated as the family's real trouble, and the disclosure is filed as a sign of her illness. Denial keeps the family intact by moving the pathology from the abuser onto the person who named him.
