  1. Customer Development parallels Product Development

Blank proposes running a separate four-step process (Customer Discovery, Customer Validation, Customer Creation, Company Building) alongside engineering's product development, so that market and customer learning is managed as its own disciplined track rather than assumed. The first two steps are iterative loops you repeat until you have evidence of a repeatable sales model, and you do not advance until each step's hypotheses are tested against real customers.

  2. Startups search, they do not execute

A startup is a temporary organization searching for a repeatable and scalable business model, which is a fundamentally different task from an established company executing a known one. Applying large-company execution tools (detailed business plans, functional hiring, premature scaling) to this search phase is a primary cause of startup failure because there are no known facts to execute against yet.

  3. Get out of the building

In a startup, no facts exist inside the building, only opinions and untested hypotheses, so founders must physically leave to test their assumptions directly with prospective customers. Market and customer answers are gathered in the field by the founders themselves, not delegated to staff or inferred from internal analysis.
