1. The stolen exam paper at IIT Delhi

   Hari, Ryan and Alok, stuck near the bottom of their IIT Delhi class with GPAs around five, break into the office of Professor Cherian, the rigid head of mechanical engineering, to steal a major exam paper. They are caught and threatened with expulsion, and Alok, whose poor family depends on him, jumps from a building and survives with serious injuries. The episode shows the system's pressure turning ordinary students toward cheating and self-destruction instead of learning.

2. Relative grading rewards rote over curiosity

   When students are ranked against each other on memorized exam answers, the incentive shifts from understanding to point accumulation, and time spent on original tinkering counts as a loss. The system therefore selects for compliance and filters out the inventive students it claims to produce.

3. Samir Cherian and inherited ambition

   Professor Cherian pushed his son Samir to get into IIT as a matter of family prestige. Samir did not want that path, and he took his own life under the pressure. The case is concrete evidence of how a parent's status goal, imposed on a child, can end in tragedy while the institution goes unquestioned.

4. Low rank becomes a self-fulfilling identity

   Once a numeric label like a five-point GPA is attached to a student, teachers write them off and the student starts acting to fit the label. Effort seems pointless, and shortcuts start to look rational. Reading underperformance this way shifts attention from the student's ability to the feedback loop the ranking itself creates.
