On the research planet Rainbow, zero-transport experiments trigger two Waves that sweep toward the settled zone from the poles, and the only available ship is the small courier Tariel-2 under Captain Leonid Gorbovsky. Gorbovsky stays behind with the adults, who spend their last hours on the beach waiting for the Wave.
When a community must choose between its accumulated scientific results and its children, the right choice is the children, because knowledge serves people and can be regenerated while a lost generation cannot. The book defends this through the colonists' near-unanimous choice.
