The adopted sister who may be invented
Szabó retells her Debrecen childhood from 1917 to 1935, and at its centre is Cili, an orphaned girl her parents take into the family as a second daughter. The narrator's relationship with this sister runs from rivalry and jealousy to attachment. The book leaves open whether Cili existed at all, so the reader cannot check the memoir's central relationship against the record.
