1. Koyaga's rise told across six vigils

   Koyaga is the son of a champion wrestler from a mountain people the colonisers called paleonegres. He returns from France's wars in Indochina and Algeria, leads demobilised veterans in a coup, and has President Fricassa Santos (modeled on Togo's Sylvanus Olympio) killed and mutilated before taking power in the République du Golfe. His career is recounted in a donsomana, a hunter's praise-epic performed over six evening vigils by the griot Bingo and his clowning respondent Tiécoura, in front of the dictator himself.

2. Praise-song form as vehicle for indictment

   The donsomana is meant to purify a hunter by reciting all his deeds, so the griot must list every massacre and betrayal in order to praise him. The official voice of flattery therefore becomes a complete record of the crimes. The licensed fool (the respondent) is allowed to say the insulting truths aloud because he speaks inside the ritual.

3. Dictatorship as a craft learned from peers

   Before consolidating power, Koyaga travels to consult the continent's established autocrats, thinly veiled versions of Houphouët-Boigny, Sékou Touré, Bokassa, Mobutu and Hassan II. Each one hands him a specific technique: buying opponents instead of killing them, running permanent conspiracy purges, staging personality cults, managing foreign patrons. Autocracy appears as a transmissible body of professional knowledge passed laterally between rulers, not the improvisation of one monster.

4. Cold War anticommunism bought impunity for tyrants

   Koyaga's regime survives because he positions himself as a bulwark against communism, which guarantees Western money, weapons and diplomatic cover whatever he does at home. When the Cold War ends, that protection disappears and he is pushed to hold multiparty elections. He then waits, as his sorcerers promise, for a legitimacy so total that even the wild beasts would vote for him, which exposes the democratic transition as a cosmetic rite he intends to win.
