After a Soviet bombing destroys their Afghan village and kills nearly everyone, including his wife and his daughter-in-law, who ran naked from the bathhouse into the flames, the old man Dastaguir travels with his grandson Yassin to a remote coal mine to tell his son Murad. Yassin has been deafened by the blast. Dastaguir waits at the checkpoint and a roadside shop without ever reaching Murad.
Grief has only two safe exits: the eyes, as tears, or the tongue, as words. A man who blocks both, out of pride, shock or the code of manly stoicism, does not neutralize his pain. He stores it as a charge that will eventually detonate inside him, as destructively as the bomb that caused it.
The deafened boy cannot understand his own injury, so he concludes that the soldiers and tanks stole everyone's voices and the world itself fell silent. His misreading is literally false but figuratively accurate. War destroys a community's capacity to speak, hear and transmit meaning, not just bodies and buildings.
The person who must deliver unbearable news carries a second wound. He rehearses and delays, and fears that the telling will destroy the listener's honor or will to live, so the message becomes a weight he cannot put down. When the recipient turns out to know already and still does not come, the messenger's ordeal is exposed as both pointless and inescapable, and the family bond breaks under the news itself.
