1. Paul Atreides becomes the Fremen messiah

   After House Atreides takes over Arrakis, the only source of the spice melange, the Harkonnens and the Emperor betray it and kill Duke Leto; his son Paul and Paul's mother Jessica escape into the deep desert. The Fremen take them in, and Paul fits a prophecy that the Bene Gesserit had deliberately planted among them long before, so they accept him as the messiah Muad'Dib. He uses their fighting force and his threat to destroy the spice to take the imperial throne, while he foresees that his name will be used to justify a galaxy-wide holy war.

2. Water discipline as total social system

   On Arrakis water is so scarce that Fremen culture is built around it: stillsuits recycle the body's moisture, sietches seal their humidity inside, and the deathstill takes a dead person's water for the tribe. Because a body's water is tribal property, scarcity shapes law, mourning, hospitality and moral worth, so that shedding tears for the dead counts as a costly gift.

3. Control the scarce resource, control the empire

   Read Arrakis as a hydraulic or extractive empire: whoever controls the one irreplaceable resource, whether spice or water, holds power over everyone who depends on it. Paul's key insight is that the power to destroy a resource is the power to control it, so the colonized people who actually live with the resource end up holding the decisive leverage.
