1. Ball-boy Xuân's accidental rise to hero

   Red-haired Xuân, a street orphan working as a ball-boy at a Hanoi tennis court, is fired for ogling a woman. A lustful widow, Madame Deputy Customs Officer, takes him up, and through the Europeanizing Civilization couple's fashion and reform circles he is passed off as a medical expert, a tennis prodigy and a moral reformer. The novel ends with Xuân deliberately losing a tennis match to a visiting Siamese champion to keep diplomatic peace. He is hailed as a patriotic hero and marries into a wealthy family.

2. The happy funeral of greedy heirs

   When the family's great-grandfather finally dies, his descendants are delighted, because the death releases the long-awaited inheritance. The mourning itself becomes a social showcase. The procession is a parade of new mourning fashions from the tailor shop, photographers and hired dignitaries are staged for display, and grief is performed for onlookers while the real emotion is relief and appetite. A ritual meant to express filial piety is emptied out and refilled with commerce and self-display.

3. Westernization adopted as consumable fashion

   The novel argues that the colonial bourgeoisie's 'Europeanization' movement treated modernity as a set of purchasable surfaces: revealing swimwear, tennis, slogans about women's liberation and hygiene. These imported forms were adopted as status markers and business opportunities, not as reasoned reform. As a result, they dissolved traditional moral restraints without installing any new ethic in their place.

4. Elites read accidents as merit

   In a status-anxious elite that cannot verify competence, prestige attaches to confident appearance and to whatever flatters the group's self-image. As a result, random events get retroactively narrated as skill or virtue. Seeing reputation this way shows how an ignorant opportunist can rise: each lucky outcome is mislabeled as proof of talent, and the mislabel then compounds into further opportunity.
