Baoyu has fallen into a stupor after losing the jade he was born with, so the clan's elders arrange for him to marry the prudent, healthy Xue Baochai. They tell him he is marrying Lin Daiyu, the frail cousin he loves, and hide Baochai's face under a bridal veil until the ceremony is done. In the 120-chapter version this is the episode where household strategy openly overrides personal attachment and destroys the person it passes over.
The couplet over the gate of the Land of Illusion reads: 'When the false is taken for true, the true becomes false; where nothing is taken as something, something becomes nothing.' Whatever a person treats as real, such as wealth, rank, beauty or even love, organizes their perception so completely that its opposite becomes invisible. Seeing through that construction does not grant a truer reality. It shows that attachment, not the object, gives things their solidity.
Early on, a character describes the Jia clan as a centipede that is dead but does not topple. A great family's outward display of rank continues long after its inner finances and discipline are exhausted. The duty to perform status drains capital, as when the clan builds an entire garden for a single visit by the Imperial Consort. Meanwhile the heirs grow up untrained to earn or manage anything. By the time the collapse becomes visible, the decline is already irreversible.
The Grand View Garden gives Baoyu and the girls a sheltered world of poetry clubs and play, away from adult commerce and sexuality. Its innocence depends entirely on the authority and money of the clan outside its walls. So when an obscene embroidered pouch is found there, the elders order a night search of the maids' quarters, and several maids are expelled. The sanctuary is dismantled by the very order that created it.
