1. Sansón Carrasco's knightly defeat cure

   To bring Quixote home, the bachelor Sansón Carrasco disguises himself as a knight-errant. He loses his first try as the Knight of the Mirrors, then wins on the beach at Barcelona as the Knight of the White Moon, and the terms of the duel bind Quixote to give up arms for a year. The cure works only because it is played by the delusion's own rules, and once Quixote is back in his village without his role he falls into melancholy, renounces chivalry as Alonso Quixano, and dies.

2. Indulging a delusion to steer it

   The priest and the barber do not argue with Quixote. They stage fictions inside his framework, such as Dorotea posing as the Princess Micomicona and the enchanted cart that carries him home, so they can move him where they want. The would-be cure team ends up writing more of the fantasy, and the delusion grows more elaborate because its opponents have become its co-authors.

3. Others sustain delusion for their own entertainment

   In Part Two the Duke and Duchess, who have read Part One, host Quixote and build lavish hoaxes, including Clavileño the wooden horse and Sancho's mock governorship of an 'island.' They do this purely for their own amusement. The book shows that once a self-deception becomes visible, other people have reasons to keep it alive, whether amusement, status, profit, or the pleasure of an audience, and these people make the deceived person's condition worse than any original error did.

4. The squire who half-believes for gain

   Sancho Panza knows his master is mad, yet he stays because Quixote has promised him the governorship of an island, and over time he absorbs some of the knight's idealism while Quixote absorbs some of his realism. Seen through Sancho, a delusion spreads by partial buy-in. The follower keeps his doubts, and self-interest keeps him inside the fiction until he can no longer tell where his skepticism ends and his investment begins.
