1. The scarred twin sent to Lebanon

   In 1940s Manaus, the adolescent Omar slashes his twin Yaqub's cheek with a broken bottle in a fight over a girl, Lívia. The parents, Halim and Zana, send only the wounded Yaqub, not the aggressor, to a village in southern Lebanon, where he spends about five years, while Omar stays home as his mother's favorite. Yaqub returns withdrawn and nearly unable to speak Portuguese, then leaves for São Paulo and becomes a successful engineer. Meanwhile Omar sinks into drink and idleness in Manaus, and the brothers' hatred ends in violence and Omar's imprisonment.

2. Unequal love deforms both children

   A mother's total indulgence of one child and a father's jealous focus on his wife ruin both sons, in opposite directions. The pampered twin never has to grow up and becomes dependent and self-destructive. The banished twin turns his wound into cold, disciplined ambition and a vindictive memory, so favoritism corrupts the favored child as surely as the neglected one.

3. History told from the servant's quarters

   The family's story is reconstructed by Nael, son of the indigenous maid Domingas, who lives in the back room and is kept at the edge of the family. He knows that one of the twins is his father but is never certain which, and he assembles the truth from Halim's confidences, his mother's fragments and his own watching. Reading the household through its unacknowledged dependent exposes the class and ethnic labor that sustains the family's drama, and makes memory itself an act of claiming a place.

4. Family decay mirroring a city's transformation

   The family's collapse runs in parallel with the change in Manaus, from an old port city through the 1964 military coup to the Free Trade Zone boom of imported goods. That era also brings the murder of the poet-teacher Laval. Private ruin and urban modernization act as one process in which intimate history is erased and turned into commerce.
